I wanna Raq

April 23!

These are the 3 finished bowls I have right now:
One:

Two:

Three:

There are a couple of extra shots of this last one at the bottom of the page.
Hope you get the idea. Each one is a little funny-shaped since the papier mache always shrinks when it dries and doesn’t retain its original round shape. They are coated with shellac which helps to repel a little moisture, but since they’re made from paper it’s best to only use them for dry contents. They each measure approximately 11 inches across and 4-5 inches tall (with feet).
Thanks for checking them out!

Woo hoo!

Well, I got honorable mention in the whiplash contest, and so many nice compliments that I’m encouraged to kick these things into production finally. They’re s-l-o-w going, but I sure love the process. I’ve even decided to try some smaller yogurt-cup sized vessels, and what will these be used for? I don’t know…I just hate throwing plastic away. I’ll just coat them in papier mache and they’ll disappear!

Hi! My name is Rachel. I’ve been making these papier mache bowls for a couple of years and always end up giving them away as gifts. Thought this whiplash competition would be perfect for them, and I’d love to be in the running for the Reform School prize. They’re made from household waste: junk mail and phone books, mostly. Except for the paint and shellac, they’re all recycled.
The image inside the bowl was inspired by vintage tea cup designs. I make my sketches from Ebay posts and then kinda mix it up a little. After I draw on the bowl with graphite, I paint around the design so you can still see hints of the phone book pages or newspaper peeking through. This bowl measures approximately 11″ in diameter and 4.5″ tall. As you can see, it’s not perfectly round.
